Back Up (Clone) Your Mac's Hard Drive with SuperDuper!

2009Since SuperDuper, etc. cannot write the com.apple.rootless Extended Attribute that marks the files in question, it will drop that Extended Attribute in the copying process. Therefore the clone it creates will not possess "System Integrity Protection." After restoring from a clone, the workaround is to reinstall the OS, which will overwrite the vulnerable files with the com.apple.rootless Extended Attribute.It's all there in Shirt Pocket Watch - Uncovering our rootlessness. If I understood things correctly (always an issue at play with moi), one will need (or should) reinstall the OS after rebooting from a CCC or SuperDuper clone...Ergo. When in DU did you notice the S.M.A.R.T status of your HDD? Did Disk Warrior find errors in the directory? Have your tried starting up in Safe Mode? Reinstallation is certainly an option, but my suggestion is to try to get things sorted out first. It is not a good idea to install on a problem HDD, especially if you are consider an Archive and Install, which is what you would do to preserve your data. ? I have already installed a clean system on my external drive. Does that mean you have installed OS X from disk? Is your data currently on that external HDD? Is your HDD a FireWire HDD? Once I reinstall all of my apps there, and get it running properly, can I move all of that to my internal HD somehow? If you have a fully installed OS on your external FW HDD you can then reformat your internal HDD with Disk Utility and clone your whole external HDD to the internal HDD using a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. El Capitan ships with a new OS X feature: System Integrity Protection (SIP), also known as “rootless” mode. This reduces the attack surface for malware that relies on modifying system files by preventing any user, whether with system administrator (“root”) privileges or not from modifying a number of operating system directories and files.It doesn’t eliminate the possibility of malware or folks finding a way to subvert this mode, but it does increase the difficulty of finding a hole to penetrate. All such changes discourage those who hack for profit or destruction, because the more time it takes and the less likely successful, the more often they turn to other operating systems and targets.However, a few system-modifying and system-extending software programs can’t work properly under SIP, as I discussed back in July in covering this feature and a simple workaround available in the public betas. Given the current state of things, our current 2.6.2 release of SuperDuper is not Lion compatible. Specifically, we know we have two issues of significance under Lion:Deprecated command-line tool The "disktool" command was deprecated and effectively removed, and we rely on that for a number of things, including refreshing disk mounts when a copy starts, and automounting during a scheduled copy.Updater crashes Our automatic updater crashes under Lion, which makes it hard for Lion users to update (although they can download from our site and install manually).With that in mind, also remember that Apple is going to be releasing this through the App Store. That means that there's no delay between an "RTM" build (which we can test against) and when you get the GM: it'll get declared RTM, someone will push a button somewhere and BAM! it's GM, and in the App Store.Add to that the fact that I'll be gone nearly half of July. Which means, if Lion comes out in the first half of the month, as it very well could, and probably will...I think you can see where this is going.Ring Three–Where the Rubber Meets the RoadWell, perhaps not where you think. Might make it possible/necessary to run SuperDuper, CCC, et. al. from the Recovery Drive or to post process activating the Rootless mode to restore the Rootless mode. I doubt that would be scriptable in the usual sense since at least two reboots would have to occur, but it might be in the form of a printed set of instruction to the user. Personally I would not want to leave that to the users to perform. Too many would not understand the reason and would ignore it leaving their system in an exploitable state. Suffice it to say ShirtPocket, Mike Bombich, and a legion of malware developers are working on the problem. Speaking of Mike Bombich when I attempted to launch Carbon Copy Cloner I got a popup saying "CCC is not certified for this version of OS X" and kicked me out to the CCC web site.
