Pillow Academy graduates and Mississippi State University students JC Garrard, Brock Makamson, Hayden Pillow and Hayes Bennett bought a school bus and turned it into the ultimate hangout spot on wheels. The interior is outfitted with three couches, a TV, an air conditioning unit and two bunk beds. (By Johnny Jennings, Copyright 2025 Emmerich Newspapers, Inc.) It’s almost like something straight out of a movie. Four former high school buddies buy a school bus, turn it into the ultimate hangout spot on wheels and hit the road in search of good times. Their destination — of course — is Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, the home of one of NASCAR’s most iconic races, screaming V-8 engines, and a rowdy party scene. None of them had ever bought a school bus, much less driven one a long distance with their best friends along for the ride. What could possibly go wrong? Well, thankfully nothing. It wasn’t a Hollywood script, it was just an unforgettable week in the month of October for Pillow Academy graduates and now Mississippi State University students Brock Makamson, Hayden Pillow, JC Garrard and Hayes Bennett. Last summer, the group bought a school bus, previously in service for the Grenada School District, and remodeled the inside for more casual seating. With the bus procured and outfitted, a gang of 10, including six other friends from State, hit the road to experience an event Garrard called “uniquely American.” “It was interesting, but we had a lot of fun,” said 20-year-old Garrard, who is studying agriculture at State. The trip, though, went just as planned. No crazy side mission that created a funny storyline. The crew had an uneventful drive down there and back in the bus, which is really the star of the show. The whole thing got started when

Focusing on everyday things like public transport, the books you find in holiday cottages and the Daily Mail, he always finds something wonderfully cheeky to say that is also right on the money. He genuinely seems like a poet who always keeps a pen and paper handy in case of inspiration, which he finds everywhere. Not only this, I admire how he plays with other forms for poetry. This ranges from the orderly Excel spreadsheet to the more tactile Scrabble tile formation. When his body was discovered, Christopher had some books, a camera, his diary, the sleeping bag he was found in, and his rifle – which Carine didn’t even realize Christopher owned. His journal also indicates that he brought a sack of rice and a compass, but no maps. Though Chris left a note on the bus door, he did not do anything else to draw attention to his situation. The bus was not near any flight plans, but he could have lit a fire that would have been seen from the nearby town from Healy, or nearby hunting camps. Carine, his sister, contends that he wouldn’t have started a fire because he would never risk burning down a forest to save his life. Bus 142Hikers take a break near Bus 142. It was initially one of a small number of buses used by a construction company to provide remote accommodations for the construction crew from Fairbanks that worked on the road upgrades between 1960 and 1961. The bus engine was removed, and beds and a wood-burning stove were placed inside the bus instead. When the Stampede Mine closed in the 1970s, all but this one bus were removed, as this bus had a broken rear axle. It now serves as a back-country shelter for passing hunters, trappers, and visitors. Blocks to their apartment to avoid taking the train while high. When he was ready to go home, his car had been in the garage for 13 days, and he couldn’t afford to get it out. He had to find another way back to New Jersey, so he went to the bus station and tried to get a ticket, but he was too high. He gave a homeless man $10 to buy him a ticket, and he got on what he thought was the right bus.He remembers being woken up by the bus driver when they pulled into the depot, knowing only he was somewhere in New Jersey. It took a four-mile walk to another bus station and a $5 bus ticket to finally get home. The next morning, Adam was sitting on his couch when his brother and sister-in-law stopped by. They told him that if he didn’t make changes in his life, they didn’t want anything to do with him. He contacted a friend who had mentioned Crystal Meth Anonymous to him, but since he lived in Jersey, he was reluctant to go into the city. His friend picked him up and brought him to his first meeting. “I fucking hated it. I couldn’t sit still, I was so nervous,” Adam said. But he stuck with it and went back two more times that week. He continued to work the program until it worked for him. He relapsed once in 2015 after chatting with a man on Grindr he didn’t know but used with. “I shot up, and the last thing I remember was waking up three days later,” Adam said.“Maybe it’s age or I just did so much shit,” he said. “I did a lot of drugs and wound up shooting up like four times in one day.
