Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question. Just wondering: Like a web browser, if there any way to view the music, videos, etc. you've visited in the iTunes Store over time? Like the Safari History menu in the iTunes Store? Just wondering. The most iTunes can do is simply remember the last handful of pages you visited, and you can go back and forth between them in the upper left hand corner. Also, you can click and hold down the mouse button on the back or forward arrow, to see a longer list of pages you recently visited. However, that is the extent of iTunes remembering what pages you went to. CD that you insert and eject it when it’s finished. This allows you to easily just keep feeding CDs into your computer and letting iTunes work through them in the background while you’re working on something else. The Automatically retrieve CD track names from Internet allows you to disable the CDDB lookup for newly-inserted CDs. Note that you can always initiate a manual lookup of CD information from the iTunes Advanced menu. Lastly, the Import Settings button opens a new window that allows you to specify your default audio file format and bit-rate for your imported CDs. iTunes supports the AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3 and WAV file formats. Presets are provided for each format that should meet a typical user’s needs, although you can choose to customize your import settings more precisely if you so desire by selecting the “Custom” option in the Settings drop-down menu. Although there is much debate and discussion about the merits of various audio formats and bit-rates, a simple rule of thumb is that iTunes’ AAC encoder will produce slightly better quality audio files at a given bit-rate (ie, file size) than iTunes’ MP3 encoder will, but you will sacrifice compatibility with other digital audio hardware and software players, as MP3 is a much more widely-supported format. In short, if you only intend to play your imported music through iTunes or on your iPod or other Apple device then you can select the AAC format. For a more compatible library with other hardware and software, you will probably want to use the MP3 format. The other formats (AIFF, Apple Lossless and WAV) will create significantly larger file sizes, as these are essentially “lossless” compression. These formats are generally only of interest to higher-end users and audiophiles. More information and discussion on the various audio file formats can be found in our Digital Audio Formats forum in the iLounge Discussion Forums. Buying Digital Music Another possible source of music for your Apple media devices is online music stores such as the iTunes Store itself or other third-party digital music services such as Amazon or Walmart. The iTunes Store works within the iTunes software application, and any music purchased from the iTunes Store is automatically downloaded and added to your iTunes library. More detailed information on purchasing content from the iTunes Store can be found in our Complete Guide to Using the iTunes Store. Note that some commercial digital music services still use the Protected WMA format for their music, which is not compatible with iTunes or any of Apple’s media devices. However, the industry has in general been moving away from protected music formats, and services such as eMusic ( and Amazon MP3 (www.amazon.com) now offer digital music for sale in a non-DRM-protected standard MP3 format. These files contain no copy protection or other restrictions, and can be played on any player which supports the almost-universal MP3 file format. But copying songs and handing them out to friends is still illegal. If you have an iPod, you'll need to purchase music from the iTunes Store or look for songs in MP3 format at other stores. Non-Apple players will generally handle WMA (DRM) files as well as MP3s. Some also play unprotected AAC files, which can be bought from iTunes in the iTunes Plus section. Regardless of what player you own, it pays to do some spec checking before loading up your digital shopping cart — a browse through the manual will tell you what files you can buy. Apple announced a new version of iTunes, 7.0, at its special event in San Francisco on September 12th, 2006. The new release allows access to various enhancements made to the online music/video store and introduces some new navigation mechanisms. Television shows downloaded from the iTunes store are now available in a 640x480 resolution -- quadruple the resolution previously offered. Another key improvement in iTunes 7.0 is the ability for the iPod to push music back to the computer -- a capability previously offered only through third-party utilities. Now when a single iPod is connected to one authorized Mac, then another, it will be able to synchronize libraries among all three (or more) devices, rather than having to be synchronized with only a single Mac at a time. iPod-related improvements also include a new management interface that shows a graphical representation of iPod hard drive capacity (broken down into photos, videos, audio and other). iPod management is no longer accomplished through the Preferences pane. iTunes will also now automatically download cover art for items in your music library if you are a registered member of the online store. Also now available through the iTunes store are movies. Currently only available in the United States, the movie store will feature titles from Walt Disney's four studios: Pixar, Touchstone, Disney, Miramax. Like television video, the movies will be available in 640x480 resolution. The movies will take anywhere from a half hour to an hour to download on a high-speed connection, but can also. Large iTunes library - excruciatingly slow. Thread starter Thread starter sancco Start date Start date Jul 22, 2012 You are using an out of date browser. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. Status Not open for further replies. Sep 16, 2009 216 0 18,710 #1 I was wondering if anyone knows why iTunes is so slow with large librarys. Mine has a response time of about 20 seconds for simple scroll, rename etc. tasks. I've got the library folder on a SSD and the media on an internal HDD. I've got an i7 920 @ stock and 6GB of RAM.When it takes forever to respond, is it because its overworking the CPU or SSD or HDD? What component upgrade would see improved performance of iTunes with large librarys?Any educated opinions would be appreciated, thanks. Mar 25, 2010 60,372 1,078 152,940 #2 You can't improve anything in your system, sounds like an issue with iTunes.Try removing and re-indexing your library. #3 You can INDEED speed up your iTunes Library.I'm a music lover, and in fact have a huge database. Have over 150k songs and a itunes.xml file over 200MB.What I have seen so far are the worst problems ever. No questions about it.This is what I did to resolve most of the slowness. Today I have a very good speed (best then ever before). Just for knowledge, when I started the testings and the problems, usually it took around 45 seconds to load itunes, and usually it hanged up while working or scrolling down the library. Today, it takes no longer then 10 seconds to load and usually it does not lock anymore.1) There are some considerations where you store your musics (library), where you store your profile AND where you store your itunes library files.1.1) your music you can store wherever needed. I personally have it on a RAID controller, which is much better1.2) your profile may be a problem, better if your windows profile is ALSO on your SSD disk1.3) the itunes library MUST be on your SSD disk.2). IMessage, SMS, and MMS. Photos and videos are stored on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Visual voicemail password (the SIM card must be in your device during backup). Ringtones. Purchased music, movies, apps, iBooks, and TV shows from the Apple services.2.2 What Does iCloud/iTunes Backup Not Include? Also, iCloud or iTunes does not back up some types of files. Check the content below to find out what is not included in iCloud or iTunes backup. What is not included in iTunes backup? Content from the iTunes or App Store or PDFs directly downloaded to iBooks. Files synced from iTunes or Finder, such as the imported MP3s/CDs, books, videos, and photos. Data already existed in iCloud, including iCloud photos, SMS, iMessage, and MMS messages. Apple Pay information and settings. Face ID or Touch ID settings. Apple Mail data, Activity, Health, and Keychain files. What is not included in the iCloud backup? Data is stored in Gmail and Exchange mail. Apple Mail data. Data already stored in iCloud, like iMessage, calendars, notes, contacts, voice memos, iCloud photos, SMS, MMS messages, and Health data. Face ID or Touch ID settings. Apple Pay information and settings. iCloud Music Library and App Store content.2.3 iCloud Backup vs. iTunes Backup: StorageBy default, iCloud automatically offers you 5GB of free storage to store photos, videos, settings, etc., when you set up an iCloud account. If you regularly back up your iDevice, the free storage may become insufficient as time goes by. If you need more storage, you can upgrade it anytime. There are some types of storage plans you can choose from: $0.99/month for 50GB, $2.99/month for 200GB, and $9.99/month for 2TB, etc. Although the monthly payments are not expensive, they are still relatively higher than most online cloud storage services. (iCloud storage is not enough?)Comparatively, iTunes does not limit the iTunes library storage. As long as there is enough computer storage, you can store as many backup files as possible. However, the iTunes interface may slow down when the iTunes library gets large. (iPhone can't back up because there is not enough space on the computer?)2.4 iTunes vs. iCloud Backup: Data EncryptionBoth iCloud and iTunes backups encrypt your data to protect your privacy from disclosure. The only difference is that iCloud automatically encrypts the files enabled by default, whereas iTunes lets you manually encode data. The encrypted data for iCloud or iTunes backup is displayed below. The encrypted files in iTunes or Finder backup include: Your saved passwords and Wi-Fi settings. Call history, contacts, SMS, and WhatsApp messages. Photos, videos, and notes. Health data. Website history. The location data. The encrypted files in iCloud backup include: SMS and iMessage. Contacts, call history, calendars, and voicemail. Notes, Safari browser history, and location history. Photos, Health data, Keychain & passwords, and device & network settings. 3rd-party app data, like WhatsApp, Kik, Viber, Hike, and WeChat.2.5 iCloud vs. iTunes Backup: Pros & ConsCreated by Apple, both iCloud and iTunes backups are believed by many people to be reliable and secure to use.
