What does WGET do?Once installed, the WGET command allows you to download files over the TCP/IP protocols: FTP, HTTP, and HTTPS. If you’re a Linux or Mac user, WGET is already included in the package you’re running or it’s a trivial case of installing from whichever repository you prefer with a single command.Unfortunately, it’s not that simple on Windows (although it’s still very easy!).To run WGET you need to download, unzip and install manually. Install WGET Download classic 32-bit version 1.14 here or go to this collection of Windows binaries in Eternally Bored here for later versions and faster 64-bit builds. Here is the downloadable zip file for 64-bit version 1.2.If you want to be able to run WGET from any directory within the command terminal, you’ll need to get information about path variables in Windows to figure out where to copy your new executable. By following these steps, you can convert WGET to a command that you can run from any Command Prompt directory.Run WGET from anywhereFirst, we need to determine where to copy WGET.exe. After downloading wget.exe (or unzipping the associated distribution zip files) open a command terminal by typing “cmd” in the search menu:Let’s move wget.exe to a Windows directory that will allow WGET to run from anywhere. First, we need to figure out which directory it should be. Type:path You should see something like this:path in cmd in Windows 10″ />Thanks to the environment variable “Path”, we know that we need to copy wget.exe to the folder location c:WindowsSystem32. Go ahead and copy WGET.exe to the System32 directory and restart your command prompt. Restart the command terminal and test WGET Yes you want to test that WGET works correctly, restart your terminal and type:wget -hIf you have copied the file to the right place, you will see a help file appear with all available commands. So, you should see something like this: Now it’s time to get started.Get started with WGET Seeing that we will be working in the command prompt, let’s create a download directory only for WGET downloads. To create a directory, we will use the md (“make directory”) command.Switch to c:/ prompt y type:md wgetdown Then, change to your new directory and type “dir” to see the contents (blank). Now, you’re ready to do some downloads.Sample commands Once you have installed WGET and you’ve created a new directory, all you have to do is learn some of the finer points of WGET arguments to make sure you get what you need. The Gnu.org WGET manual is a particularly useful resource for those inclined to really learn the details. However, if you want some quick commands, read on. I’ve listed a set of instructions for WGET to recursively mirror your site, download all images, CSS, and JavaScript, locate all URLs (to make the site work on your local machine), and save all pages as a .html file. Yes HTTPS support. Yes No Yes FTP support. No No Yes Support authentication (User/Password). Yes Yes Yes * It is available, but we can't access it from VBScript (We need to use .NET instead). ** VBScript stops if we try assync command-line read with WGET. We need to show the command line prompt to show progress (It can't be viewed on the same window from script). I hope the table below helps you choose the method you will use to download files. WinHTTP and MSXML does not need you to redistribute anything with your code, but you lost some interesting functions from WGET for Win32 (it have much more functions than it! Read WGET documentation!). If you need to read the header from page or "Check local file version [...]" may be useful for you, choose it. WGET support this function natively, but we can implement it in .NET reading header and getting Content-Length and comparing it with Local file. If WGET is discarded, you can choose WinHTTP or MSXML. If you do not need to support Windows 9x, choose the 1st one. It is because MSXML, to download internet files in Windows Server versions of Windows, need manual change from Internet Explorer Security Zone, allowing local programs to access external resources (Security > Trusted Sites > Access data sources across domains). If we do not do that, our script will return "Access is denied." and will be closed. I really recommends WinHTTP, only if you do not care that your script will not run in Windows Server versions without you ask for user to change Security Settings, making the server less secure. Using WGET WGET does not have COM access, but we can call command-line from our script and use it. strScriptFile = Wscript.ScriptFullName Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")Set objFile

If you want to start it under PowerShell using just "curl", you will launch Invoke-WebRequest, because such an alias is defined by default. So you have to enter curl.exe instead. The utility supports several protocols, including FTP and, unlike ftp.exe, also FTPS (over TLS). If you specify the --ftp-ssl switch, then it will try to establish a secure connection and will fall back to FTP if this fails. You can force FTPS with --ssl-reqd.The automatic login is achieved with the parameter -u username:password or --user username:password followed by the path to the desired file:curl.exe -u ftp:ftp -O ftp.gnu.org/gnu/wget/wget2-latest.tar.gzThe -O switch tells curl to save the file under the same name. If you want a different filename as the destination, you can achieve it like this:curl.exe -u ftp:ftp ftp.gnu.org/gnu/wget/wget2-latest.tar.gz -o wget.tar.gzTo download arbitrary files from a directory, curl is less flexible than FTP; at least, the implementation for Windows is. You can display the contents of a directory by appending a trailing slash:curl ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/wget/ -u ftp:ftpBut this does not help to automate the download because curl lacks the support of wildcards if the file names change regularly (for example, with backups, whose names usually contain the date).FTP download with curl subsequent listing of directory contentsConclusionFTP is a long-serving method for file transfer and offers the possibility of automating processes using commands that are simply stored line by line in a text file. However, the Windows client does not support secure connections, so you have to limit its use to environments where this is not a problem.Subscribe to 4sysops newsletter!Curl is a newcomer to the Windows world, offering a variety of options and dealing with multiple protocols. However, it is less flexible for automating FTP downloads.. If not, follow the next steps to download wget on Windows. 2. Download Wget for Windows. Both my local and remote machines require connecting to external networks via a proxy. My local machine (Windows 10) is configured to use a PAC file to access the proxy settings. VS Code appears to use this correctly when installing extensions locally, so I want to use Allow Local Server Download to avoid configuring the proxy settings for vscode remote. It appears Allow Local Server Download does not use these settings when it gets a request to download something on the client.Version: 1.41.0-insider (user setup)Commit: abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23Date: 2019-11-25T10:20:07.524ZElectron: 6.1.5Chrome: 76.0.3809.146Node.js: 12.4.0V8: 7.6.303.31-electron.0OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.14393The failing setup log is as follows: [16:08:33.704] Got some output, clearing connection timeout[16:08:34.956] > cacde26d0f14: running> [16:08:34.990] > Acquiring lock on /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81> b1317fe3a5e6e39c23/vscode-remote-lock.abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23> Installing to /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b131> 7fe3a5e6e39c23...> Downloading with wget> [16:08:35.697] > Acquiring lock on /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23/vscode-remote-lock.abbf52b1378e> 2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23> Installing to /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23...> Downloading with wget> > [16:08:42.202] > wget download failed> failed: Connection timed out.> USER=lpetre> PWD=/home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23> HOME=/home/lpetre> VSCODE_AGENT_FOLDER=/home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders> Trigger client server download[16:08:42.220] > > VSCODE_ARCH==x64==> cacde26d0f14__trigger_vscode_server_download__> Waiting for client to transfer server archive...> Waiting for /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23/vscode-scp-done.flag and vscode-serve> r-linux-x64.tar.gz to exist> [16:08:42.220] Got request to download on client for x64[16:08:42.435] Resolver error: Failed to download VS Code Server: HTTP 407 - Proxy Authentication Required[16:08:42.436] ------">[16:08:33.242] remote-ssh-nightly@2019.11.21120[16:08:33.242] win32 x64[16:08:33.244] SSH Resolver called for "ssh-remote+lhs", attempt 1[16:08:33.245] SSH Resolver called for host: lhs[16:08:33.245] Setting up SSH remote "lhs"[16:08:33.317] Using commit id "abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23" and quality "insider" for server[16:08:33.318] Testing ssh with C:\Windows\System32\OpenSSH\ssh.exe -V[16:08:33.391] ssh exited with code: 0[16:08:33.391] Got stderr from ssh: OpenSSH_for_Windows_7.9p1, LibreSSL 2.6.4[16:08:33.398] Using SSH config file "c:\Users\lpetre\.ssh\config"[16:08:33.398] Running script with connection command: "C:\Windows\System32\OpenSSH\ssh.exe" -T -D 52747 -F c:\Users\lpetre\.ssh\config lhs bash[16:08:33.403] Install and start server if needed[16:08:33.405] Terminal shell path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe[16:08:33.703] > [16:08:33.704] Got some output, clearing connection timeout[16:08:34.956] > cacde26d0f14: running> [16:08:34.990] > Acquiring lock on /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81> b1317fe3a5e6e39c23/vscode-remote-lock.abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23> Installing to /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b131> 7fe3a5e6e39c23...> Downloading with wget> [16:08:35.697] > Acquiring lock on /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23/vscode-remote-lock.abbf52b1378e> 2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23> Installing to /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23...> Downloading with wget> > [16:08:42.202] > wget download failed> failed: Connection timed out.> USER=lpetre> PWD=/home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23> HOME=/home/lpetre> VSCODE_AGENT_FOLDER=/home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders> Trigger client server download[16:08:42.220] > > VSCODE_ARCH==x64==> cacde26d0f14__trigger_vscode_server_download__> Waiting for client to transfer server archive...> Waiting for /home/lpetre/.vscode-server-insiders/bin/abbf52b1378e2976803f81b1317fe3a5e6e39c23/vscode-scp-done.flag and vscode-serve> r-linux-x64.tar.gz to exist> [16:08:42.220] Got request to download on client for x64[16:08:42.435] Resolver error: Failed to download VS Code Server: HTTP 407 - Proxy Authentication Required[16:08:42.436] ------The remote wget failure is expected. The local Proxy Authentication failure is the problem. I don't get local proxy problems when installing extensions (ie installing the nightly remote-ssh extension worked flawlessly).
