Monsters of the mind take on living shape in the form of melancholic pigs, banjo-playing zombies and ghostly scarecrows, and nature itself becomes twisted and gnarled: a distorted reflection of the restlessness and pathos of adolescence. A refined sensitivity to flora and fauna is evident throughout, with llamas, flea-bitten donkeys and other animals featured in a hazy, mote-drifting, sun-scalded landscape.“I felt I was being guided by spirits,” says Weber, and a montage sequence with close-ups of one monstrous head after another, set against a blazing sky, achieves a truly dreamlike effect. These are images you want to get lost in, but they quickly displace each other, as in a potent reverie. As Weber says, “Movies to me are like dreams: you work all day and you let go at night, the subconscious takes over.” And in the world of Forevermore dreams overlap with reality and blur into each other. The transmogrification of universal experiences to surreal settings intensifies the empathic impact. At one point, Luna Crimson attempts to make friends with some kids from the outside world who have trespassed on to the property. Her embarrassment as her mother serves up a rump roast that consists of the devil’s ass steaming on a plate, accompanied by moldy vegetables, will be familiar—from comparably humiliating but less exotic incidents—to many viewers from their teenage years.“On a mystical level, on a cellular level, it’s more than a coming-of-age story,” says Weber. “I feel like I’m playing my mother and Colette’s playing me. I was constantly trying to get away when I was a teenager.”Offbeat humor suffuses the

FDR's first important story--eight lines long--came a few days later from Eliot. A Democratic magazine at the University had reprinted sections of an article by Eliot in which the president criticized both parties but did not say whom he supported. The Democratic publication made much of the criticism of the G.O.P. and omitted the unfavorable remarks about its own party.Roosevelt approached Eliot to ask him how he expected to vote, not knowing the rule against candidates talking to the president. Nevertheless, FDR was able to get the story and the CRIMSON of October 29 reported that Eliot would vote for McKinley and the rest of the Republican ticket. In February, 1901, the first group of freshmen was elected to the paper's staff, but FDR was not among them. This is to argue that Changez’s desperate attempt at assuming this stance has its roots not only in the cultural alienation and racism that he is subjected to in America, especially in a post-9/11 America, but also in his futile effort to naturally integrate with a Pakistani way of life. By uncovering certain ambiguities in Changez’s ideological rhetoric, the paper tries show how Changez’s critique of American corporate fundamentalism stems from his lack of a sense of belonging and from a feeling of problematized identity.[Keywords: Mohsin Hamid, Reluctant Fundamentalist; post-9/11 America; Pakistan, alienation, fundamentalism, identity, ideology]Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a perfect instance of how an author writing in the first-person narrative mode can create an inescapable situation of aesthetic dread and verbal domination. It is also an admirable example of how a constant tension between twin polarities of sympathy and alienation can be sustained across 180-odd pages by adjusting the narrative voice in terms of its tone, texture and reliability. The novel is wholly occupied by the overpowering voice of Changez, its narrator and primary character whose appearance at a Lahore chai khana is sudden, unsolicited but apparently not unintentional. The disarming candour of his person and the Oriental charm of his demeanour ensure a riveting though artfully one-sided exchange. His monologue starts with a formal and seemingly kind offer to be of assistance to an American, who gradually settles into the role of a silent interlocutor and whose nationality is brought into the equation within the first three lines of the novel: “Excuse me, Sir, but may I be of assistance? A low r2 means that only a small portion of the variability of one variable is explained by its relationship to the other variable; relationships with other variables are more likely to account for the variance in the variable. The correlation coefficient can often overestimate the relationship between variables, especially in small samples, so the coefficient of determination is often a better indicator of the relationship.Coefficient of alienationWhen you take away the coefficient of determination from unity (one), you’ll get the coefficient of alienation. This is the proportion of common variance not shared between the variables, the unexplained variance between the variables.Coefficient of alienationExplanation1 – r2One minus the coefficient of determinationA high coefficient of alienation indicates that the two variables share very little variance in common.
