A federal judge orders a preliminary injunction against the online service, saying it likely violated software copyrights for playing back MP3 files. A federal judge has ordered America Online to temporarily stopdistributing a recent version of its popular service, AOL 6.0, saying thesoftware likely violates copyrights for computer code used to play back MP3files. If upheld, the ruling could force the AOL Time Warner division to pay millions of dollars in damages, marketing expenses, and costs related to retrieving or altering existing copies of AOL 6.0. At issue is software copyrights owned by PlayMedia Systems. AOL subsidiary Nullsoft holds a software license from PlayMedia for use in its Winamp MP3 player, but the court found AOL may have gone too far by including the code in a different media player bundled with AOL 6.0. According to the decision, the agreement limited Nullsoft's right to usethe software "within Winamp.""PlayMedia has established probable success in proving that AOL exceededthe grant of the license," U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz wrote in hisdecision Monday. The ruling does not affect AOL 7.0, a new version of the software released two weeks ago. AOL hasbeen gravitating its customers to AOL 7.0 and says 2.5 million peopledownloaded the software in the first five days of its release. AOL says it will fight to reclaim its right to distribute the older version of its software. According to the company, it will lose some $39 million in prepared promotional materials for AOL 6.0, including discs burned with the software for public distribution. It estimates retrieving copies already distributed would cost tens of millions of dollars more. Lastly, AOL fears it eventually may be required to provide a "tool on demand" that would remove PlayMedia software from some 10 million copies of AOL 6.0 currently in use by its members."This is a preliminary ruling, and we respectfully disagree with it," saidJim Whitney, a spokesman for AOL. "We are already seeking a stay and willpursue an immediate appeal."PlayMedia, a Los Angeles-based company that designs media and securitysoftware, filed the lawsuit against AOL in April on grounds that theInternet service was infringing on PlayMedia's AMP computer softwarecopyright. AMP decodes digital audio files compressed in MP3 format and hasbeen used in numerous applications, including Napster, to play digitalaudio files on personal computers.PlayMedia sued Nullsoft in 1999 over unauthorized use of its software inWinamp but later agreed to license the code for $7.5

As below. Click “OK” to confirm. The Basic version – simple and straightforwardThe AOL Basic webmail version is mainly for users who work through an older browser, are on a slow internet connection or simply don’t want to change and adopt new things. After all, there is comfort in familiarity, right? The interface is simple with no bells-and-whistles. To switch to the Standard or Accessible version, locate and click on the corresponding link which should be at the bottom of the page.AOL’s great effort for senior (?) citizens – the Accessible versionApparently, a sizeable number of AOL users are senior citizens – the company has been an email service provider for a quite some time now. Anyway, I greatly applaud the effort AOL has put into the Accessible version which shows that they truly care for their subscribers.AOL prides itself on making products for people with accessibility problems. This version supposedly works better with screen-reader software and helps users to easily navigate the different sections and options. The Accessible version also supports a whole gamut of keyboard shortcuts similar to those found in email clients. The fourth version – unknownMy old AOL email account loads in an interface which is like a cross between the Standard and the Basic versions of today. I suppose it was the ‘Standard’ some years back because I see the links to Basic and Accessible versions at the bottom. It also features a plugins gallery to the right.. A team of nostalgic programmers have reverse engineered AOL 3.0 and put it back online for everyone to enjoy. It’s called RE-AOL and it aims to recreate the ‘90s era version of the early internet, complete with low-fi graphics, chat rooms, and all the noises you’re familiar with from the days of AOL Instant Messenger. The project is the brainchild of Canadian programmer Mike Killingbeck, who first got the idea to bring AOL back during the pandemic. He told Motherboard he was depressed and that he needed a project to keep his mind in the right place. “Reminiscing about my days as a ‘90s teenager on AOL provided me an escape from a looming midlife crisis. The 90s were an amazing time for so many reasons,” he said. Videos by VICE During one of his reveries, he got the idea to see if AOL was still around in any shape or form. But after AIM finally went offline in 2017, it was all gone. He decided to bring it back. Killingbeck reverse engineered the code by using a similar project as a base. The previous project was someone else’s interpretation of AOL’s P3 protocol. He put this together with some old incomplete technical manuals, and after a few months of trial and error was able to make make a server that would talk to a AOL’s old client software.I’ve messed around on RE-AOL and, to be honest, there’s not a whole lot going on there right now. You can make a friends list and chat with people on its version of AIM and wander into random chat rooms, but that’s about it. The news does not update and email does not work. It does, however, nail the sights and the sounds of ‘90s era AOL. Killingbeck and his team perfectly copied the washed out color palette and iconic noises of AOL 3.0. Anyone can get access to RE-AOL by signing up for the Patreon and hopping on the Discord. Those without accounts can still log in as guests and poke around. “Classic AOL represents a snapshot of a decade that many
