PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Nearly 100 protestors gathered Sunday at Pensacola's Graffiti Bridge to voice their concerns over our national parks.As a part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recent firings, seven park rangers were let go in mid-February from the Gulf Islands National Seashore.According to the National Park Service, the Gulf Islands National Seashore is the fifth-most visited national park in the country. Last year, it saw 5.7 million visitors -- and those numbers are only rising."To see personnel being fired, that's awful," protester Peter Young said. "That's specifically why I'm here."Philip Iversen is one of 1,000 rangers slashed across the country in the federal cuts impacting national parks. He's a now-former biological science technician at Gulf Islands National Seashore."We're just trying to raise awareness about what's happening, about the natural resources that are being affected by these firings and cuts in funding," Iversen said. "We're trying to show how important these parks and public lands are for the American people. The national parks and public lands have been told as America's greatest idea, and we don't want to see those negatively affected."Personnel fired from Gulf Islands National Seashore include fee technicians and biologists who helped monitor the habitats and species that makeup the seashore."I want people to get up and be vocal about this problem," Iversen said.
